Saffron

Kashmiri Mongra saffron, often referred to as the “king of saffrons,” is a premium and highly coveted spice that originates from the picturesque region of Pampore in Kashmir, India. Known for its rich history, unique qualities, and unmatched purity, this saffron has earned a reputation as the best in the world.

The tradition of saffron cultivation in Kashmir dates back over a thousand years, with the fertile lands of Pampore being the heart of this saffron-producing region. The delicate flowers of the Crocus sativus plant, from which saffron is derived, are carefully hand-harvested in the autumn months. The saffron threads are painstakingly separated and dried with precision, ensuring that only the finest quality is produced.

Saffron FAQ's

Saffron is a precious spice derived from the stigmas of the Crocus sativus flower. Each flower produces only three delicate red threads, making it one of the world’s most labor-intensive crops. The finest saffron comes from the Middle East, where ideal growing conditions and centuries of expertise combine to produce this exquisite spice. Our saffron is sourced from small family farms in this region, ensuring the highest quality and supporting traditional farming practices.

Saffron’s high cost stems from its labor-intensive harvesting process. It takes about 150,000 flowers to produce just 1 pound of saffron, with each flower being carefully hand-picked and processed to extract the valuable stigmas.

Saffron adds a unique flavor and golden hue to a variety of dishes. It’s perfect for rice dishes like paella and risotto, enhances soups and stews, and adds depth to desserts. A little goes a long way – just a few threads can transform your culinary creations.

We entertain orders of all sizes. Orders for small quantities are also treated with equal importance.

Pure saffron has an intense, sweet aroma and a vibrant red color. The threads should be dry and brittle to the touch. When added to warm water, it should slowly release a golden color. Authentic saffron has a slightly bitter taste, never sweet.

To preserve saffron’s quality for up to 2 years, store it in an airtight and light-proof container, ideally not made of glass or plastic to protect it from UV light. Keep the container in the refrigerator (not the freezer) to maintain its potency while preventing moisture buildup. This method helps safeguard saffron’s delicate flavor and aroma for up to 24 months, ensuring it remains at its best for your culinary creations.
